Become a member

On this page you can get answers to some of the questions you may have if you are considering or already want to become a member of the Facebook group “Danmarks Transkønnede”.

Is the group for me?

If you are under the trans*umbrella, then the group is for you. The trans*umbrella includes if you are – or simply is considering whether you are e.g. non-binary, intersex, transgender, trans person, non-cisgender, etc. From here referred to as the “target group”. It is also for everyone who was once a member, but for one or more periods of time perhaps feels away from the target group.1. There must be room for searching around or having doubts.

The above means that the group i.a. is not for you who are:

  • cisgender: A person whose perceived gender and gender expression match the gender the person was assigned at birth.
  • a media, student etc. alone with an interest in gaining an understanding of or communicating about the target group1.
  • a parent or another close relation to someone in the target group1. Eg. a parent to a child.

If you are not a part of the target group1, you are instead referred to membership in the related group ”Åbne Transpersoner i Danmark”:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/aabnetranspersoner/.

  • Here, people from the target group1 answer questions or participate in projects/media productions, if they have the time, desire and energy to do so.
  • Here, as a parent or other close relative of someone from the target group1, you can experience making contact with others in the same situation. As parents of a child in the target group1 however, it is also recommended to contact the organization FSTB, which was set up by parents of transgender children. Read more and find contact information here:
    https://www.facebook.com/foreningenFSTB/
  • Consider using the option to post anonymously. However, this primarily applies if you are part of the target group1 or need it to protect someone in the target group1, with whom you have a relation to.
  • In this group, be aware that it has the type “Public”, where “Danmarks Transkønnede” has the type “Private”. That is all your friends and family can take a look if you write openly about yourself in it. On the other hand, you can be as anonymous as possible with an anonymous post in this group. Partly because membership of the group does not necessarily mean that you are part of the target group1 of “Danmarks Transkønnede”. Partly because you have the opportunity to post anonymously. However, admins will always know who the sender of an anonymous post is.

Regardless of who you are, remember to also look through the page with links. It also contains offers for you who are not in the target group1:

I am afraid that friends and family will see that I become/am a member. Should I be worried?

As a starting point, your membership of the group or your activity in the group Danmarks Transkønnede is only visible to the members of the group. This is common to all groups with the type: “Private”. The group is therefore precisely of the type: “Private”. The opposite is the case if it was “Public”. However, it must be mentioned that a member can choose to show the group to someone who is not in the target group and thus a Facebook group can never be 100% a safe space if you want to be 100% open about who you are. However, the goal is to create a group where loyalty has a high priority and everything therefore stays in the group as much as possible. You can then also be a member of the group with an alternative profile and can thereby still achieve complete safety.

How do I become a member?

In order for you to become a member of the group, it is required that you receive an invitation from an existing member.

BUT

no matter what, then…

write to one of the admins of the group, if you don’t know anyone in the group who can give you an invitation. An admin can possibly help you find your way to other physical or online networks that can do a difference for you. Including the local networks around the country. Please also note that an admin does not give an invitation. An invitation must always come from an regular member.

and write to one of the group’s admins, if you have questions that you currently need answered. It could be anything. Nothing is too big or to small. Do not hold back. Maybe you have so many questions that you can’t figure it out. Try using the overview here to find your way to all the topics you want to know more about:
https://danmarkstranskoennede.dk/se-hvad-vi-taler-om/
Maybe there are some questions that you hadn’t thought about yet. The list is a summary of all the topics we have discussed in the group throughout its lifetime. For you to know a little about who you write with, you can get to know the group’s admins better in the overview here:
https://danmarkstranskoennede.dk/om-gruppens-admins/

If you apply without an invitation, you will be contacted by an admin in a private message with the aim of helping with the above. In this case, make sure to check your Facebook message requests and your Facebook spam inbox, as the messages sometimes end up there. If you have in general blocked private messages from strangers, the request will be rejected with a message informing you to write to us the other way around. You will then receive this message as a notification in Facebook instead.

How does a member send me an invitation when they and I agree that I should be invited?

You can be invited in one of the following 2 ways:

  • Ask a member you know to add you to the group via the “Invite” button, which can be found at the top right of the Facebook app or on the Facebook website. It only appears on the front page of the group.
  • Apply for the group yourself and ask a member to write to an admin about approval. You apply by finding your way to the group via the Facebook app or the Facebook website. Then press “Become a member of the group” at the top of the page (possibly on the right). Find the group in the Facebook app under the name “Danmarks Transkønnede” or via this link to the Facebook website:
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/danmarks.transkonnede.

What does it mean to be an admin and who do I get in touch with when I write to an admin – or the admin writes to me?

“Admin” is short for administrator. On the group front page under “Members” you can see who are the administrators in the group. In groups of the type “Private”, this public member list only shows admins. You can only see who else is a member if you become a member. This is also the case with “Danmarks Transkønnede”, which is of the type: “Private” in order to protect the members as much as possible. Click on a portrait of an admin to get to the admins personal page. Through that you can partly read a little about the admin and partly write to the admin via the “Message” button, which opens Messenger.

Also, get a detailed overview of the list of admins here:
https://danmarkstranskoennede.dk/om-gruppens-admins/

When I am invited or apply myself, I get 3 entry questions. What are they for?

As a starting point, your answers are used to write respectfully and with relevance in private messages to you. If you become a member with an invitation, you will e.g. get a welcome message. If you apply without an invitation, there will be e.g. a message from an admin, as a follow-up to your application.

If you apply with an invitation, , the purpose of the questions is also simply to avoid invitations that ends up in the wrong group. Unfortunately, this happens regularly. If you don’t answer them, a message will therefore be sent to the person who invited you, to find out if everything is as it should be. To make the admin’s task easier and for you to become a member faster, it is therefore recommended that you simply answer the questions briefly and relevantly.

If you apply without an invitation, the purpose of the questions is not to clarify whether you are trans*-enough, but instead the purpose is e.g. to refer you elsewhere if you are clearly assessed as not belonging to the target group1. As someone in the target group1, you should therefore not fear the questions in any way. The answers are used by an admin when sends a message the other way to show respect for what’s on your mind.
